It would be worth a try ;) How practical that will be depends on the
size on teh file and how 'binary' they really are - as Francis
mentioned, Augeas uses the first few ASCII chars for internal purposes,
but whether that leads to trouble will depend on what exactly the lens
looks like.

Which formats do you have in mind ?
