 I've attached to this bug a simple patch which avoids the crash on RHEL6
 ppc64. This would probably need some more testing to make sure it really
 doesn't change behavior on other architectures.

 If this is not the right place to post it, please let me know where to as
 I'm interested in getting this upstream.
