thanks a ton for taking on this hairy ball of wax. As for the patches, I
like them a lot, though I don't see a way how we can use 6/6: I agree
that the quadruple backslash is really ugly, I don't see how we can get
to the saner world of your patch without causing serious breakage in
lenses that are distributed by other packages (e.g., netcf and libvirt)

It would require a coordinated release of augeas and all these other
packages, and I don't think tat in practice we'd be able to do that
without inflicting serious pain in the transition.
