I didn't really follow that line of thought, since it was only failing
when trying to build static libraries - without that, it all builds
(and works) perfectly. I'll have to check if the PPC build of FC2 is
using the same SRPM. I haven't really checked that hard. I suppose
it's possible.

The current version I'm using is just modified to skip the
"--enable-static" parameter to configure. Nothing (yet) seems to miss
the static libraries being present.
