OK, I've now tried all the CD images, and 2,3,4 appear to be OK,
but 1 and 5 bad.

I did get 1 and 5 from RO, and 2,3,4 from AU, but the MD5SUMs all check
out and the ISO FS structure/directories/filenames are all there, so the
images themselves aren't bad, just the file contents, for some reason...

Any ideas?
