check your Xorg log to see if direct rendering is enabled.  I suspect
the default kernel does not include the drm modules, so you'll
probably need to build a new kernel or build the drm from cvs:

FWIW, there is an open bug in freedesktop.org bugzilla regarding drm
problems on alpha:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4508
the tester is using an mga g450, however, radeon may just work... I dunno.
