People on this list might therefore be interested to know that the
unofficial Debian Alpha port is up to date (pretty much) with Debian
Jessie and is hosted at Debian-Ports (www.debian-ports.org) and an
installer disk was recently crafted for it; see message at:

Now is a good time to install while Debian unstable is relatively
stable before the official release of Debian Jessie (for the
release architectures) later this month.

Desktops such as lxde and xfce work well.  (Gnome was failing to
run due to a bug in gdm3 a year or so ago and I presume that is
still the case.)  Note that X-window only works on BWX capable
Alphas.

While the announcement in the message cited above says the radeon
kernel module is built it is actually useless;  you have to build
the radeon module into the kernel for it to work correctly on Alpha.
