Question: configuring a sound card

Greetings,

	Can someone advise me on how I can determine if my sound card is
configured and working properly?  I see that I've got the play and rec
commands, but they don't seem to produce any sound.  Perhaps the volume
needs to be adjusted?  Perhaps the driver isn't working right?
