Question: configuring a sound card

hi,
i apear to be using the alsa sound drivers, I am us9ing fedora.  However 
I can't get any sound to play. This is confusing because I had no 
trouble on redhat 9.  all I had to do is type
play /usr/share/sounds/phone.wav and i would hear the sound.
Now I don't hear anything. I can tell my speakers aren't muted because I 
can hear the hum when I turn them up. when I mute them the hum goes 
away.  Do you have any sugestions?
