apt-get update?

Hi.  It shouldn't.  All apt-get update does is update your local
system's data base of available packages.  It doesn't install
any programs.  Options such as install, upgrade, or dist-upgrade
actually update the software on your system.  The also shouldn't mess
with your kernel.
