Announcing Updates at the Speakup Modified

Hard question to answer in a way. Is it that much better? Depends on what you need to do and what purpose Linux performs in your computing environment.

FC2 uses a 2.6 kernel, whereas FC1 still uses a 2.4 kernel. Also, the gnome installed with FC2 is newer, as are the nascent gnome accessibility utilities.

Of course, part of the move to 2.6 kernels is the move from the now deprecated oss to also sound.

There's also a significant move on security with the provision of se-linux, which is thankfully turned off by default because it's such a bear to configure. This last is probably not of interest to casual users--at least not yet.

I don't know if this helps you. But, here's what I'd do were I you:

1.)	I would not throw away those FC1 disks just yet. Some people have succeeded installing FC1 where they have failed with FC2. Your hardware may or may not work out one way or the other.

2.)	If you have sufficient downloading capibility, I would definitely set a download in process to retrieve the four iso images required for FC2.

3.)	I would install FC2 and only go back to FC1 if 2 proves untenable for some reason.

I understand the frustration this advice can exaserbate. I certainly do appreciate that downloading this huge files is not trivial, especially over a dial up connection. So, if you only want to poke around a get a sense of what it's like working with Linux, and downloading another set means fussing with a dialup connection, forget what I said and install FC1 for now.
