Yes, you could, and it's preferable because it allows rpm to manage the
system interdependencies more properly. You get none of that with 'make
install'

In fact, I would suggest always checking for an rpm before doing
./configure, make, make install. And, if you find no rpm, see if you can
create one with for rpmbuild. Often .tar.gz packages will come with a
.spec (or .spec.in) file. Sometimes they even work to build an rpm
without tweaking.
