If your system uses the mingetty program instead of getty, you can use
the --autologin parameter. I'm not on Linux right now so am typing this off
the top of my head, but my command is approximately:
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty --autologin myid tty1
The screen shows the login prompt, followed by your ID as if you had typed
it, followed by "<automatic login>".
Hmm. I wonder if I add "&>/dev/null" if that might hide the display of the
ID. I've already got .hushlogin...
