Totem is a front-end to gstreamer; it is a graphical application,
mplayer is as well for the console as for graphical (gmplayer) 
interface.

I use Debian Sarge, I still have used stable Debians for years and still 
have used mplayer with full success and no any problem.

Doen't w32codecs meets your needs?

I have no avisynth.dll at all.
