Advice for blind linux newbie

It sounds like your friend has a lot of trouble with graphical systems.
Switching from windows to linux would not help if he tried to use
speech enabled graphical desktops on linux.
You'll want to edit /etc/inittab and change the run level from 5 to 3,
so that linux comes up in text mode.

If your friend also has trouble with screen applications, like I do,
then he may want a 100% text based solution,
which is only possible on linux.
I wrote my own software to make this possible, and have been using it for 8 years now.
