Trouble with BRLTTY in Fedora 5

Hi,
I just got Fedora Core 5 up and running. ...except for the fact that
brltty only shows a line of question marks. Does that mean that the screen
is in graphical mode? I've set my initdefault to level 3, my inittab line
looks like:
id:3:initdefault:

And I've alsow done: chkconfig --level 3 firstboot off

I even tried adding "nofb" and removing "rhgb" from the kernel line in my
grub.conf, but the only thing I get from brltty is question marks. :-)

Is there anyone who can ehmm straighten out the question marks, so to
speak???
