There's something i don't understand with the accessible midnight commander

Hello listers,
I have tried building AMC, (Accessible Midnight Commander" from source
and am encountering a strange problem:
When i run AMC from a terminal in Gnome, everything works as expected
and i can use my function keys, backspace, escape and so on to navigate
and manipulate the program. When i run AMC from a text console however,
i find myself in some sort of emacs mode and function keys, alt key, esc
and so on don't work.
What am i doing wrong?
This is on a ubuntu Edgy system and i have built the program on a text
terminal not from gnome-terminal.
