It sounds like you are not logging in as root.
Try this using your original Ubuntu installation:
1. type
Alt-f2
Get you to the run dialog
Type
Gnome-terminal
To go to the gnome terminal
3. type
Sudo su
To log in as root
4. type
Useradd username
To create a new user
5. . type
Passwd username
To add a password for the new name you've created
6. log out and log in with your new user name and password
7. now attempt the same action you were trying to do
If you want to reinstall Ubuntu using dual boot, this might resolve your
problem
1. select the partition of your original ubuntu
2. delete all partitions
3. create fore new partitions
/boot
/root
/swap
/home
4. Now try to install
5. Note Ubuntu might hang if you do not delete your previous Ubuntu
installation.
6. Note Ubuntu might hang if you select automatic drive selection
Hope this helps. Good luck!
