patching a kernel

Hello!
I would like to patch  the 2.6.22 kernel with speakup, just for fun.
I know from earlier experiences that you need to patch the tarball from the latest speakup cvs in order for it to work.
BBut I can't find that document on how to do it on the speakup site.
How do i do with my kernel tarball?
