somewhat OT: problem with laptop and linux

You can try to run the memtest which I think is an option on ubuntu live
cds.
Borrow some eyes when you do that.
If you do a propper ram test, the ram is cleared in the process.
If i am wrong in the availability of the memtest on the cd, I have a
staticly linked memory testing program somewhere. The problem sounds like
hardware. It is not easy to take all power from a laptop, so you can try
the second-best things, like trying to get into the bios and reset to
factory settings, save and reboot. Over-write the ram with a memory
tester etc.
Good luck.
