The volume buttons of my Thinkpad X60S work out of the box under
Debian, on the console as well as in a X session. Seems like the buttons
produce regular key codes. Of course this hasn't to be true for the X61
as well.

The Thinkpad wiki which Janina pointed to is probably the best source to
find out more.
