Autotools appear broken on CentOS

I have a virtual private server with 1and1. Recently it was cracked and 
we had to reinstall everything. The autotools that I obtain with yum 
appear to be broken. autoconf, automake and configure appear to work, 
but when I run make I get a lot of error messages from libtool. What can 
I do?
