debian problem

Try typing alt-ctrl-F1 to switch to a console, then log in and find out
what is running. If it's gdm or a similar display manager, turn it off
or remove it, or set up Orca to work with it if you want to use it.

I'm assuming you know how to use the ps command to inspect your system
and work out what the problem is.
