audio capturing in LInux?

I should be more specific as I speak of more than one task.
*often* I am running into the need to either a, take part in a live webneir.
b, capture the embedded audio from a workshop I could not take part in, or 
that I did over the phone,
those are two different things.
for the audio stream for example one can  use something like audio hijack 
pro on a mac.  equal in Linux?
also  how friendly is sound cloud?
keep finding that one too,
