Cd test tool.

Hi!
I seem to have lost my dvd drive in vinux.
Though it seems detected when using the diskutility in gnome.
Are there any commands that can be written to find out if the dvd/cd is still alive or if i have to buy a new one?
The strange thing is that i burned an iso file with it yesterday and booted from it yesterday but now it seems not to work.
But hardware is a confusing thing of life i guess.
