I've read very favourable comments about it.

An alternative would be to start with a basic Debian installation, then add
just the packages you want.

If you can do most of what you need entirely from the Linux console (without
running a graphical desktop environment), this will reduce resource
consumption considerably. You could then start up GNOME and Orca only when you
have to run a graphical Web browser or some other desktop application.

In Linux, you can get a lot of work done without a graphical user interface.
