chromium follow-up: speech makes no sense

It seems I was able to get chromium talking by way of the instructions I 
received.  What it say, however, is quite another thing:  it speaks one 
or more other languages when I tab, and that's about the only time it 
says anything.  I tried removing and reinstalling both chromium and 
chromium-chromevox in case I'd accidentally screwed up a languages 
setting, but I get the same speech I can't understand.  As always, I'll 
be grateful for any help.
