turning on the links are numbered feature in links?

Another possibility, a keyboard macro on local machine aliased so when 
you go on dreamhost that has your links command line ready to output 
when you hit the defined macro key.  This way dreamhost has no possible 
cause for complaint and you get a little convenience.
