Put your assignment of a value to the PS1 variable in the .bashrc file in
your home directory along with any other setup you want for your bash shell.

I too would like to know how to change the default prompt, but just in case
you weren't aware, typing PS1=$ will do what you want, though it will only
last for the current terminal session.
