no sound in ubuntu command line

Welcome to Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS (GNU/Linux 4.4.0-36-generic x86_64)
It says amixer and alsa-utils are both installed, but typing amixer gives the following:
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such file or directory~0D
