How do you edit markup? e.g. html?

[Linux for blind general discussion]

I use nano for all my editing of text files, but that can be quite
annoying for source code and mark-up language as well, especially
since my text-mode screen reader doesn't read whitespace and syntax
highlighting doesn't translate to a audio environment.
