Progress report.
I can get the same behavior in Mate as in xfce, whiuch needs several additional packages, namely:
ccsm
compiz #upgraded
compiz-bcop
compiz-plugins-main
compizconfig-python
libcompizconfig
It works but...
Maybe that's a little to much for just that, there are inconveniences and I found a simpler way:
open mate-terminal and type following command:
xfwm4 --replace &
And voila: we replaced the default window manager (marceo, aka metacity) by that of xfce (xfwm4).
So we get the same feature as in xfce: you can use Alt + Scroll mouse button to zoom in/out entire screen.
Please try it. If that's OK we can make this command permanent at the user level for those who like it.
Happy new year,
Didier
