Don't be sorry, what we need to do is find how to improve the current
situation if possible.

I would like to test the assumption that the issue comes from spawning
pulseaudio in text mode, although espeak don't use it as it is built
against portaudio instead.

If you are kind enough to hep me on that, please do this:
1) Edit as root the file:
/etc/pulse/asound.conf, replacing in it this line:
autospawn=yes
by this one:
autospawn=no
2) Make sure you will login next time in text mode typing as root this
command:
login-chooser text
Then reboot.

Let me know if that makes a difference, for better or worse.

Caveat: If I do that here, then the first time I type startx mate
doesn't speak at first, I don't know why. If that occurs, just press
Alt+F2 to bring up a Run menu and type:
orca -r
This should restart orca.

PS If there is an improvement, we will still have to deal with the
