This line:
Access: (0755/drwxr-xr-x)  Uid: (   33/www-data)   Gid: (   33/www-data)
indicates that only the owner (www-data, uid 33) has write right.

So you should update as this owner.

Assuming that www-data has no shell you could type a command like:
su -c <update-command> www-data -s /bin/bash

If this account has an associated shell instead:
su -c <update-command> www-data
