quick and dirty audio amp?

Well, I can offer 2suggestions. First try
alsamixer
Once in there, you will probably need to hit an f6 to select which sound-card to 
alter the volume on. After hitting enter, you can use arrows to change the 
volume.
And you can install mp3gain to boost the levels of any or all of your mp3files, 
like
mp3gain -g 3 file.mp3
Also, supposedly aumix has some tools.
