Well, it's unfortunate, but a number of things could be wrong. It's 
possible that Orca

  isn't on the system because it at one time didn't work, or because 
although with GNOME it's installed automatically, but with MATE, it 
doesn't get installed automatically, and must be explicitly installed. 
It could be that Orca is still not working because Python 3.x may not be 
in the BSD ports system still, although I can't imagine this being the 
case. It's also possible that Orca may be installed, and even 
speech-dispatcher may be installed, but no speech synthesizer is 
present. The only way to further diagnose the issue is to find out 
exactly what packages are on the live environment and the version 
numbers. Most likely, it is no longer the Python conflict, but is just 
missing software that can most likely be easily corrected.
