Both Seamonkey and Thunderbird will connect to the server with no 
issues, even when local storage is turned off in your account settings. 
Of course IMAP works best for this, as it has the option of staying 
connected to the server and getting new mail as it arrives rather than 
checking every few minutes, as long as the IMAP server supports this, 
and most do.
