Actually I forgot to mention the extensive use Cinnamon makes of window 
sounds. There is a sound when a window pops up and when it goes away, it 
does include a startup sound, and there are other system sounds as well 
that I can hear with Cinnamon that are not present on the MATE desktop. 
Still, it's not enough to switch me unless I can figure out how to get 
to the panel or system tray or whatever. And then there is the added 
problem of Audacious trying to open up the folders on my desktop, a 
highly undesirable behavior, but since I've been using mostly Clementine 
and MesonPlayer, I think I can fix that by uninstalling Audacious.
