Hmmm -- works for me:
# tar xzf crash-5.0.9.tar.gz
# cd crash-5.0.9
# patch -p1 < $HOME/symbols.patch

Maybe you were trying to apply them on top of your last patch?
Anyway, as long as you're happy with the end result...
