Maybe this is  a bit  off-topic, but isn't an API change without an
accompanying bump in soname a bug
(http://www.gnu.org/software/libtool/manual/libtool.html#Libtool-versioning) ? As such it shouldn't happen and if it does, it should be treated as a bug and fixed.
