most likely hardware problems. were the 2 machines on the same
power-line? maybe lightening caused a voltage peak on the machines?

as usual: try to get contents to a new disk (oh, maybe it's the
controllers fault, so change the controller then), try to fsck/mount the
image, use your backups :-)
