Just for proper disclosure:
HP support suggested, on the mean-while, some great tools that they have
such as SmartStart CD, or hpadu (Array Diagnostics Atility).
They give good details about the disks/array/system including past error
In my case the logs indicated a "MARK BAD FAILED" error message on the
disk, which probably means it's a hardware error.
