From jkeating at redhat.com Mon May 1 15:22:17 2006 From: jkeating at redhat.com (Jesse Keating) Date: Mon, 01 May 2006 11:22:17 -0400 Subject: [Fedora-ambassadors-list] Report from Linuxfest Northwest Message-ID: <1146496937.810.34.camel@dhcp83-49.boston.redhat.com> Greg and I had a good time at Linuxfest. We met lots of neat people, had some good discussions, got some good information out to the people, and got some really good feedback from those in the trenches. The event was fun as usual, this was my fourth year there. There was room for probably 35 "booth" type things, and as usual the majority of these are for local user groups, distribution groups, special interest groups and the like. There was a few commercial folks there too, Google, Pogo Linux, Wirepath, Fibrecloud, Mysql AB, Oracle, and a few others. The talk I was most interested in was the K12LTSP talk. This project takes what the LTSP project does, modifies it slightly, rebuilds the FC installer (and CentOS installer) to add a high level option to either install stock FC or to install K12LTSP. Depending on the choice some things get automagicaly done, such as networking, package sets, etc.. They've done a great job with it, and Greg and I both think we need to find some way to help out and to bring K12LTSP into the Fedora fold. They provide a great testcase for variant Fedora releases. Greg's talk went very well, it was fun, it was informative, and it answered a lot of questions that people had, while paving the way to more questions. His talk brought up the subject of opening Core for outside contribution and outlined a couple possible ways of doing this. Either allowing some folks to contribute to the Core CVS, or moving all things Fedora outside into a big pile of packages that is Fedora, bluring the lines between Core and Extras, and allowing any distribution that is comprised of packages in this pile could be called Fedora. I personally like this idea, but there is a long road to get there. Greg outlined some of the things in process to get to that point, such as yum in Anaconda, external repos in anaconda, and finally variant spun distros. Some good questions that came up were: - When are you going to clean up the crap that is the current spec files in Fedora? Valid question, and I explained that all new packages into Fedora have to go through the review process that Extras created. This means that new packages should be clean. I also explained that we're moving to a new build system internally and that would require some clean up of existing packages, which makes it easier to make further clean ups. - What the hell is up with the Fedora Directory Server? This question came up at least 3 times. First when Greg and I were visiting Gamehouse (Real Networks) in Seattle on our way to the show. An IT architect complained that he's fighting a battle currently with other IT departments on rolling out Active Directory to solve their centralized authentication system. And without Fedora doing something with FDS, it is really hard for him to show a projected plan to having FDS in a supported product. It was also brought up during Greg's talk, and finally at the bar across the street from our Hotel where we spent the evening of the show talking with various other folks that were staying at the hotel for the show as well. The folks that asked the question all seemed to be trying to solve the centralized authentication question, and really didn't want to go the LDAP route, nor the AD route, but had to make decisions soon. What is up with FDS? Other than the name, what does it have to do with Fedora? They don't use our wiki, they don't use our mailing lists, they don't use our IRC channels, they don't have packages in Extras or Core, they don't use our build system, nor our CVS system. What are they doing? How can we bring them into the fold, and start getting their software into the hands of early adopters and folks trying to make a decision? This is a question I think we really need to bring up again and again until it gets done. - When doing variant Fedoras, what about alternative kernels? Or alternative kernel modules? This is a good and tough question. If we really want to embrace more Fedora variants, more corner user bases solving their problems and helping the project at large, we need to be flexible. We already have something of an alternative kernel in the form of Xen. If you want to run Xen instances, you have to run the base xen kernel. However we don't have an installer that runs this kernel, it isn't necessary. But lets say you need to install to new funky hardware, and the upstream and stock Fedora kernels don't have a driver for say your disk subsystem. The hardware vendor has an open source kernel module available, it just isn't upstream. Following Extras guidelines you package up the module for Extras and get it approved. How can you then use this module with the installer to be able to spin a variant Fedora that will install to your hardware? Even harder, what if its a newer version of an existing module? These are some of the questions we'll have to think about and solve as we move closer to the reality of user spun variant Fedoras. - While on the subject of variants, we got asked if we'll be using rpath's rbuilder to do the variants. This is an interesting question that neither Greg nor I could really answer. Rbuilder is very neat technology, and whether or not it makes sense to use it should be investigated. Neither Greg nor I had enough information to expand beyond that. - Whats the status of Stateless, and what is Stateless? Another great question. Havoc mentioned something about Stateless at last year's Boston FUDCon, but nothing has really happened since then. Bill Nottingham just submitted some updates to inittools for stateless purposes, but no real roadmap has been put out, nor has any discussion happened as to how this would effect things like LTSP. I hope to speak with Bill this week to maybe get something out there. All in all I think it was a good show. I'd like to continue having a Fedora presence there and continue doing talks such as this that explain where we're coming from and where we're going. Folks travel to this show from all over the area, Canada, Oregon, and into the East as well. For those that can't make it to California for LWCE or some of the other shows, this is another chance to touch base with the community at large. -- Jesse Keating Release Engineer: Fedora -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Its a excellent idea though we don't have any banners done yet. If you are going to produce banners yourself, kindly upload them somewhere in the wiki and pass the links. If you dont have any banners, then post to fedora marketing list or fedora artwork list and ask for it. We might be able to produce a few variants and everybody can link to it. Some questions (not in actual words though) asked were: 1) Is yum still as slow, as compared to apt-get? 2) How does beagle work internally? 3) What do you need to install, in order to run Xen? 4) Where can I get the kernel source rpm? 5) Does suspend and hibernation really work in FC5? 6) How does SystemTap work internally? How does the scripts look like? Some feedbacks I got were (not in actual words of course): 1) Fedora should include mp3 support, otherwise new users will not be able to play their favourite music. Some form of documentation on how to setup mp3 support would be great. It should be easily accessible to new users as well. On remote connections there is the unreliability of the mirror (locality, load etc) which has to be factored. Since yum connects to the repositories every time, it appears to be slower to a seemingly equivalent apt-get connection. If you do prefer apt-get, it is available in Fedora Extras. > 2) How does beagle work internally? Indexed searches based on a in-kernel file notification mechansim called inotify. Different documents have additional filters to index and keep track of data better. More information in http://beaglewiki.org/Main_Page > 3) What do you need to install, in order to run Xen? http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Tools/Xen > 4) Where can I get the kernel source rpm? People who usually ask for this only need the kernel-devel package which provides the headers for the third party modules to be build against the current kernel. There are instructions on using this as well as downloading the full source code if you need it in http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/release- notes/fc5/#id2917672 > 5) Does suspend and hibernation really work in FC5? Hardware specific. We tested them on many of internal systems we could get our hands on. http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/HCL/Machines/Laptops Overall feedback has been pretty positive. If there are systems that this doesnt work out of the box, feedback in http://bugzilla.redhat.com against the kernel with workarounds if any would be quite useful. > 6) How does SystemTap work internally? How does the scripts look like? http://sourceware.org/systemtap/ SystemTap is a higher level layer (awk like scripting language) over the in-kernel kprobes/dprobes mechanism (C voodoo). It provides a safety as well as guru mode for executing scripts based on check points and finding out various interesting information on the system. Examples: http://people.redhat.com/berrange/systemtap/bootprobe/ and we have already used it effectively for OLPC to reduce memory consumption and bloat. Patches flow back into Fedora as appropriate. Caveat: Technology preview and more works need to be done on polishing before it gets into production systems. > > Some feedbacks I got were (not in actual words of course): > > 1) Fedora should include mp3 support, otherwise new users will not be > able to play their favourite music. Unfortunately, exams have been tying me down, and will do so for a while yet :(... Can someone please kickstart this effort? http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Presentations/Standard please upload slides there. I also wrote a few guideline on what (I think) the slides should be like: 1) Minimal text - At most 7 pts per slide 2) Have off screen notes for points the Ambassador may need to cover. As you go along and see what you might need to make it work, the Ambassadors, and the Steering Committee (famsco) will make sure to support you with this. It does seem to work for Brazil (see Rodrigo's message). Cheers, a On 5/15/06, Michael J. I know that many people will say, GREAT!! Yet Another Mailing List, but hear me out. First of all, a separate list would help segment discussion which already goes on ambassadors-list and could really be taken care of elsewhere. A side effect of this, is that there would now be one list for people to subscribe to which would have event info only, so they could get involved with them. Of course, the list would act as a general event publicity list as well? Thoughts? I found a job last week and I will be working that very day. I called the man who organized the event and sincerely apologized for cancelling everything 3 days before the event. Please find the combined review of the people who wants to write some words and feel free to post these words! last but not least before you read the whole commits; I wanna say thank you all, you guys which helped Florian and me that the Linuxtag was such a good event for Fedora in in my role as a Fedora Ambassador. Special Thanks to Jens who was the whole time with me, Joerg who was every time at the booth and answered a lot of questions, Thorsten who has take care of his Sony Laptop .-) and not to forget Florian who has the most important role and work to do! And a very, very special thanks goes to the URZ of the University of Basel which was a big contributor for the booth :-) So enough from myself ... Review from Chitlesh Goorah (Kadischi / LiveCD) =============================================== Although the Fedora Project considered LinuxTag as a small event, this is a big event in Europe. A great event to meet great Fedora participants :) In accordance to the questions directed to me at the booth, I may say that there were quite some interest in the Fedora distro :) * How Fedora can be useful to disabled persons(eyes)? (thanks KDE for being useful here) * Why Fedora Core (FC4 and FC5) default kernels have issues ? How about the testing behind it ? * Can I have a livecd of Fedora ? * Why do my firefox have so much language packs as extensions which most of the time I don't need ? * Fedora is known to be providing ONLY gpl'ed packages why do aiglx and Fedora directory server respectively require proprietary drivers and Sun Java ? * In Fedora /sbin is not in the PATH for _su_ example ifconfig but as _su -_, /sbin is in the PATH? other distros like Mandriva and Suse it is not the case. Why? Besides these questions, most of my time I spent in explaining what is the Kadischi Project. Gerold and I had a discussion in a "real-life" Fedora Ambassador meeting , at least in Europe to produce high quality output. (Idea which I back :) ) My girlfriend (from the Kubuntu Marketing Team) informed that the Kubuntu livecd team would like to work with us on producing high quality KDE based livecds. (Ill be in contact with them soon) PS: We got a new Fedora Ambassador from Germany: J?rg Simon, whom I welcome him to the team :) His photos : http://www.simline.de/person My photo : http://www.flickr.com/photos/clunixchit/tags/linuxtag2006/ Gerold's : https://kermit.homelinux.net/Fotos/Linuxtag2006/ Review from Joerg Simon (new Ambassador since Linuxtag) ======================================================= Besides the Fedora Core, we also presented XEN 3.0 on Fedora - after Jens spend more RAM - thanks for that. And we presented the Fedora Directory Server, mostly we must explain, this is not only a OpenLDAP Interface, no that is not ActiveDirectory ;-), yes it is free, you can download it from directory.fedora.redhat.com ... but we had also experts, who want to know deeper Informations. We had a nice talk with Peter Gietz - a international LDAP Expert from the OpenLDAP-Team, we made a deep excursion in the Schemas and in the Replication and he shows us many deviations from RFC and Open Standards in the Directory Server. We will stay in interaction with him to review and report that and specify whether and where we can help us mutual. Not Fedora Policy but Linuxtag Spirit was the dry to bring mythtv (our NeighbourBooth) on a Fedora-XBOX - looked good, but the Framebuffer Mode has scotched that - but as Jens said we "have a lot of fun" ;-) Thanks to Greg to permit and provide material to produce some unofficial T-Shirts with the new Logo, unfortunately they was to small for the some of us ;-) and last (for today) my own ============================ started 2006-05-03 till 2005-05-05 On tuesday 2006-05-02 Florian Brand starts the journey to build up the booth together with Marc Schlensog. They got also help from Jens Kuehnel who arrived in the afternoon at Wiesbaden. The other "responsible" person, me has to work the whole tuesday and startet therefore the journey in the late afternoon at Switzerland. He arrived Frankfurt at midnight, where he meets Jens and Marc who came back from building up the booth. Because of the matter, that the posters are printed in Switzerland, they are already in my car and we have to finish the booth on wednesday morning :-( So we decided to start at 7:00 am in the next morning! So Jens (thanks a lot for giving me his living room for the whole Linuxday for sleeping) set his alarm-clock on 5:30 am that we all can take a shower and be "warmed up" for the next day ... It happens! The bell rings, and we startet save at 7:00 am from Frankfurt to Wiesbaden because we need the time; Linuxtag will open at 10:00 am on this day, to set up the rest of the booth which means: internet, designing the booth with posters, stickers and banners, electricity, (very important:) coffee maschine and the installation of the 4 desktops which we got from the training center of Red Hat EMEA (also organized by Florian). What should I say?! We've got it! Mostly all has finished at 10:00 am and small, little things who were not optimal were optimezed during the time of the day and the next .... We all should see what happened: Every day starting on Wedenesday the crowd of people is getting more and more who's intersting at Fedora and I think the most visited day was on saturday where nobody has really time to take place for more or less 10 / 15 minutes. We've had already answers questions like: - What is Fedora? - Where is the Red Hat booth? - Why there is no FUDCon this year? - How can I get Fedora to disrtibute my code? - Do you have any LiveCD on Fedora? and: troubleshooting, troubleshooting, troubleshooting, troubleshooting and again troubleshooting! People mostly if not asked things above mentioned, asked for personal problems with e.g. WiFi, Sound, exotic Hardware, etc. The good thing here was, that we've had the following persons at the booth (in alphabetic order) which helps to answer the most of the questions; ... Biba, Radek, Brand, Florian Broz, Milan Drepper, Ulrich Engert, Kai Goorah, Chitlesh Heinrich, Dunja Holtmann, Marcel Kassube, Gerold Kergon, Alasdair Kuehnel, Jens Mauleshagen, Heinz Schlensog, Marc Schaefer, Thorsten Simon, J?rg Vokal, Radek and if one person don't know a answer of a visitor there are always a lot of other persons at the booth who helped. We've had also nice discussions with other persons from other booth which were interested in cooperation with Fedora. Over all, my personal review and statement is the follow: Without the help of Florian Brand and his connections and knowledge of people inside the community this Linuxtag was never such a success as it was this year! For further planings, we had to decide a couple of month earlier, what we'll do ... And: Everyone has missed the FUDCon at the Linuxtag. Just my five cents and the cents from the other "writers"! -- Regards Gerold Kassube Fedora Ambassador Deutschland / Germany Email: GeroldKa at fedoraproject.org 1024D/F33128B9 4ABC A903 F1F4 D9CC C422 AACA EDF1 DF42 F331 28B9 -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... AIGLX doesnt necessarily depend on any proprietary driver. Intel i810 works fine for example. Fedora directory server is a large piece of formerly proprietary product that is still being "freed". With Red Hat's long standing investments in GCJ it is one of the priorities. I am hoping that Fedora directory server is less of a silo in the future than it is currently. > * In Fedora /sbin is not in the PATH for _su_ example ifconfig but as > _su -_, /sbin is in the PATH? other distros like Mandriva and Suse it is > not the case. Message-ID: <1148116879.4310.428.camel@sundaram.pnq.redhat.com> Hi Since FESCo is going through a process of democratization now, would it be a good idea for FAMSCo to follow on its footsteps? The current steering committee was sort of elected through a informal voting process in a IRC channel but that doesnt scale. The current steering committee http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Ambassadors/SteeringCommittee If you havent followed what Fedora Extras has been doing, http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Extras/SteeringCommittee/Nominations There isnt a structure in place for Fedora Extras packagers to do the actual voting yet but we can probably reuse whatever they come up with. Replace cvsextras group with ambassadors group in the accounts system and we should be ok. I'm a university student, and since it's almost end of the semester, ever since I applied to become an Ambassador I haven't had time to devote to anything else but university. My first goal to spread the word about Fedora is to start a Fedora Tips blog - a blog where I'd talk about my experience with Fedora, as well as some tricks and trips. My second goal would be to help translating the documentation to Portuguese. And, of course, I'd be available to give a hand in any event taking place in Portugal - or even giving any possible help over the internet for events abroad. However, I'll only have some free time in about three or four weeks. So my question is... What should I do? Is it Ok if I remain pretty much inactive until then, or should I stop being an ambassador and apply again when I have some free time to devote to the program? Thanks in advance, and sorry if this isn't the right place to ask this... We have to give them time to act productively :) But in case if we are willing for an election, I wish it could be as transparent as possible (I just saying this because elections in other distribution are _not_ transparent). The following are only my opinions i hope that will help to the election system. First of all it is a good idea to make a web voting system that a voter can place 5 votes to the person(s) he/she likes ANONYMOUSLY. login vote and logout. The voting should last for 24 hours as people are not on the same timezone and don't want to put them into trouble waiting to vote. We have to see who will have the access to vote and why. It is a very serious issue. The elections should take place once a year. When a problem with the elected person(s) arise there will be a chance if the FAMSCo wants to make reelections in a specified time. And only if the problem is serious enough. That's a small part of what i have in mind. I can write pages and pages about that matters. O/H Chitlesh GOORAH ??????: > On 5/22/06, Theodoros Synodinos wrote: >> committee. For this, I have 2 ideas: idea one: Once the poll start on a mailing list thread (preferably, ambassadors list), anyone post their wished candidate's name. Knowing the fact, that from now on everyone can subscribed to the ambassadors list One week before the polls start, we close the ambassadors mailing list subscribtion. idea two: ambassadors will write their wished candidate's name on a wiki page. no one can delete from a wiki page without notice :) > The voting should last for 24 hours as people are not on the same > timezone and don't want to put them into trouble waiting to vote. In-Reply-To: <1148116879.4310.428.camel@sundaram.pnq.redhat.com> References: <1148116879.4310.428.camel@sundaram.pnq.redhat.com> Message-ID: <200605222226.44439.nman64@n-man.com> After reviewing the other posts in this thread so far, here's my basic view of what has been said so far: 1. The Voting System Our solution for this will follow the plans for other committees. Anyone who is registered in the Fedora Account System and is a member of the 'ambassadors' group will have the opportunity to vote. The system for this has yet to be created, but each voter will need to log in using their registered account. They will then be able to place their vote. Their vote will be added to a statistical pool and will not be connected to their account. The account will be marked as having entered a vote in that election, preventing multiple votes. The number of votes permitted for each election could be adjusted, but that will be dependent upon the rules decided for each election. 2. Election Committees There will be no need to create specialized committees to manage elections. The community as a whole (the Ambassadors, in this case) will be able to agree upon appropriate guidelines for elections. Once those rules are established, the infrastructure will handle almost all other concerns. If issues arise, the community will always have the power to revisit decisions and refine the process. The Infrastructure team will be responsible for maintaining the voting infrastructure and handling accountability concerns. 3. Remaining Questions The questions that remain to be answered are merely guideline concerns. Decisions have to be made regarding the frequency of elections, total number of seats, number of seats to be opened for each election, nomination process, nominee eligibility, voter scope, number of votes for each voter in each election, whether or not multiple votes can be entered by one voter for one nominee and number of terms each committee member can serve. Other concerns may also arise, but these are the basics we need to figure out. a. Frequency of Elections Common ideas elsewhere in the Fedora Project have been for 6-month or 1-year regularity. I personally feel like 6 months is reasonable. b. Total Number of Seats The current steering committee has grown since its inception. We should try to decide if the current number of seats is reasonable, or if the number should be adjusted. c. Number of Seats Opened for Each Election Instead of replacing the entire steering committee in each election, or even taking the risk of doing so, we can create multiple sets of seats and open up only one set in each election. For example, we could use a 6-month election frequency and give all steering committee members a 1-year term. We could then put up only half of the seats in each election. This would keep the committee from becoming fractured or introducing confusion by making radical changes to the members. d. Nomination Process We need to decide how new nominees will be selected. We could easily follow the FESCo model for this. e. Nominee Eligibility What requirements do we want to introduce for steering committee members? For example, do we want to require potential nominees to be part of the group for at least x months before they are eligible? f. Voter Scope Who can vote? I think that requiring membership in the 'ambassadors' group of the Fedora Account System is sufficient, but others might feel differently. At the very least, that membership will be required, but we could add more requirements. g. Number of Votes for Each Voter in Each Election The simplest model would be to allow one vote to each voter in each election, but we could also allow multiple votes. This would allow voters to cast votes for multiple nominees. Since we are electing a committee of many members, allowing multiple votes may make sense, but we should not allow more votes than the number of open seats. h. Whether or Not Multiple Votes Can Be Entered by One Voter for One Nominee If we do allow multiple votes, we should decide whether or not a single voter can vote for a single nominee more than once. Allowing this would give one voter the ability to give all of their votes to a single nominee. This could have a significant impact on how votes can be allocated. i. Number of Terms We must decide if we want a limit on the number of terms any member may serve. In a community of this sort, I don't believe it makes much sense to place such a limit, but it is an option to be considered. 4. A Few Things to Remember As we move forward in establishing these guidelines and carrying out our elections, there are a few things to keep in mind: a. We are a meritocracy, not a democracy. In this community, voting is a privilege, not a right. There may be concerns above the Ambassadors program that may require intervention and may work against the wishes of the general community. Obviously, it is in the best interest of the Fedora Project to keep contributors happy and comfortable, but some understanding may be necessary. b. We are not alone. The Fedora Ambassadors Project has the Fedora Project Board above it and many other projects as its siblings. This means that we must cooperate with them and that we can refer to the practices of the other projects for guidance. We cannot conflict with the other projects and cannot disregard them in establishing our governing processes. c. Leading community members are here for a reason. As the Fedora Project is a meritocracy, the current leaders have their positions because they have established their participation and have shown an interest in the project. Anyone who will become a Fedora Project leader must demonstrate leadership abilities and a devotion to the Fedora Project. This is not something to be taken casually. Established community leaders also deserve a degree of recognition for their accomplishments, but they must continue to demonstrate those characteristics in order to remain in leadership positions. Now, who has something to add? :-) -- Patrick "The N-Man" Barnes nman64 at n-man.com http://www.n-man.com/ LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/nman64 Have I been helpful? A very basic nomination process like this is probably all we need right now. FESCo is using a wiki page to track nominations and has an open process. > > > e. Those people will not be able to vote until they have completed the CLA and joined the 'ambassadors' group in the Account System. You all know me as a member of the Ambassadors Steering Committee. What you might not know is that I am also a member of the Fedora Documentation Project and now on it's Steering Committee. My job/task for each fedora release is as "Editor-In-Chief" for the release notes. For FC5 I started in this position part way in to the test cycle so I had a lot of learning to do in a very short time. With FC6 coming[1] we have our docs schedule[2] posted. For FC5 we had only a small handful of translations. I would like to see if we can expand this for the FC6 release now that I have my feet a little more under me. This got me thinking about where I could seek help in this "dream." Was not until today talking to MrTom, [splinux] and ruimoreira in #Fedora-Mktg that the ambassadors project might be the perfect place to reach out. What a great way to help spread the word about Fedora than in your own language. Don't know why I did not think of it before. I do not want to take up anymore time on this list for this topic. If you think you might be interested in helping out with a translation, feel free to drop by #Fedora-Docs on Freenode[3] or join the mailing list[4]. For more information about translation Check out the L10N[5] and Docs Translation[6] pages on the Wiki. There are also pages on the fedora.redhat.com[7] site to help get you started.
