I personally feel we should give the options to our 'customers' as to whether they want the live-cd's or the dvd's. As Rahul mentioned some people do not have dvd capable drives and I personally feel giving that option for the live-cd's would be an added bonus. I would love your thoughts but I don't think it would be any extra effort for us to hold 5 iso's instead of 3. Or maybe its 6 iso's I haven't had a good look. Either way I don't mind I just thought because of our new live-cd's we should advertise that fact. I still see forum posts saying we only have dvd's when in fact this is not correct. I would like to recommend that we build a system that list our documentation and also paperwork. This system can help many people to create their own event or caloboration with other parties. We also can created own own standard in handling our event. Beside that we can make enhance our performance. The most important is to create local Fedora LUG. Local LUG can be used to distribute media and merchandise. This can eliminate multiple request or shipping cost. Local Fedora LUG should be responsibility to manage merchandise and local fund. Later on this LUG will be line P 2 P torrent which can support each other. In general, this should definitely cut down the cost of shipping if they can produce them locally. Although, I'm not sure they will call their Linux Users Group "Fedora LUG" since some of them might be using their choice of own. :) BTW, if you're already a member of local LUG, please add to following wiki page: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/LinuxUserGroups Regards, -- Thomas Chung http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/ThomasChung From hanafiah at fedoraproject.org Thu Jun 7 07:36:31 2007 From: hanafiah at fedoraproject.org (Hanafiah Muhamad) Date: Thu, 7 Jun 2007 15:36:31 +0800 Subject: [Ambassadors] Paperwork anyone ? Can i become the part of fedora team so i can promote , introduce fedora here in my city and can spread to my friends , and can spread in my university where i am studing.. i think it will be of great help to spread and promote in education institutes.. the place where i am studing there are more than 2000 students enrolled and i am also doing BS(networking) from there... so tell me can i join the team if i dont have any certification of REDHat etc ? i wish to work for fedora bcoz i really like this Operating system . well thanks for giving your time to my email - Muhammad Shahid Masood. me at shahidmasood.com www.shahidmasood.com (underconstruction) _________________________________________________________________ Connect to the next generation of MSN Messenger http://imagine-msn.com/messenger/launch80/default.aspx?locale=en-us&source=wlmailtagline -- Alex Maier Art and Photography http://amaier.net From maxime.carron at fedoraproject.org Thu Jun 7 21:49:38 2007 From: maxime.carron at fedoraproject.org (Maxime Carron) Date: Thu, 07 Jun 2007 23:49:38 +0200 Subject: [Ambassadors] French Event - RMLL (July 10-14) - Need some help Message-ID: <1181252978.18828.6.camel@localhost.localdomain> Hi folks, Spring monthes are great and busy for the french team. We have planed many events, and almost french ambassadors are involved in one of them. But it's sometimes hard to find poeple who have free time to spread fedora during working days. From July the 10th to 14th will occur the RMLL (Rencontres Mondiales du Logiciel Libre) ie "Free Software World Meetings" in Amiens, France. RMLL is a big and great event in France. Lots of poeple are coming from all over the world, and both high level and beginner conferences are planed during the week. You can find info about it at http://www.rmll.info/rubrique3.html?lang=en Patrice Kadionik (active member and community manager on fedora-fr.org) is co-chair for System and Embedded system section. Alan Cox will be there too. As this event occurs during students holidays it's possible to rent student rooms for 10?/nigth and eat for 1?/meal. Currently we're just 2,5 volunteers for this events (Christophe Polyte, Charles Vinchon, Maxime Carron [i'm the half]), which is really not enough. We need your help. Feel free to contact me for more information or if you want to attend this event. I think the main issue is that these discs are a gift from one person to another an not part of a corporate incentive program. As such we aren't required to offer the full line of Fedora products. On a practical note, we have enough trouble getting out 200 DVDs (never mind the other 200+ people who asked and had to be cut from the june list) and that's without multiplying the requests by 5 to fill a CD set. My suggestion would be to drop the talk on edition until at June 25th. We'll use the week before the July list opens to decide on format. In the mean time why don't we use our energy to figure out how to fill those that are already waiting for media and boost our capacity for next month. On 15 June (this Friday already!), I have to give a presentation of a new Regional Law that pushes the use of FLOSS/Open Standards in the Public Administration. This is the work of years and many finally arriving to an end and I'm very proud of that too. I would like to go to the talk not "only" as a member of the local LUG and part of the organizations behind this Law, but also as an official Fedora Ambassador, if you think it is the case. I'll write down a summary of this meeting and the text of the Law itself (but I'm not a lawyer, so the English translation may not be accurate and will be for your interest only). Any questions welcomed! It seems that this list got very quite right about the ways to fill Free Media Requests once the chatter about the disc format was stopped. We're still looking for ideas to boost capacity to ensure that everyone who requests a disc gets one in a timely manner. We have capacity issues every month and need everyone to do some thinking so that the program can get better with time. This is a reminder that there are 135 requests yet to be filled on the June List [1] You can help by... 1) By directly filling requests. See the Contributors page for info on how to join up [2] 2) By making a cash donation. See the Donations page at link [3] below. 3) By encouraging people who order discs to order from a vendor doing sponsored Media. The Vendors are marked with a Star at [4] or go right to the short list at [5] 4) by encouraging anyone doing respins and remasters of Fedora 7 to post them at Respins.org. Every ISO I can add to the On-Disk.com catalog means more free Media Discs being sponsored. ~Karlie Robinson [1] http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Distribution/FreeMedia/F7DVD/June [2] http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Distribution/FreeMedia/Contributors [3] http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Distribution/FreeMedia/Donation [4] http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Distribution/OnlineVendors [5] http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Distribution/SponsoredMedia From nihedmm at gmail.com Tue Jun 12 22:10:41 2007 From: nihedmm at gmail.com (nihed mbarek) Date: Wed, 13 Jun 2007 00:10:41 +0200 Subject: [Ambassadors] 135 Free Media Requests need to be filled In-Reply-To: <466EBD64.4090707@fedoraproject.org> References: <466EBD64.4090707@fedoraproject.org> Message-ID: <5bddd8fd0706121510q795eb6a9nf80ea1eb46dc0900@mail.gmail.com> Hi I am from tunisia and i can make a copy of fedora 7 for the 2 persons in the list http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Distribution/FreeMedia/F7DVD/June at tunisia How can i have information about him to send him the copys ? ? The event is organized with NaLug (www.nalug.net) and many other organizations that adhere to "Coordinamento Free Software Campania" (www.freesc.eu). We will have some technical talk in the morning, while in the afternoon the discussion will be about the Regional Law, with political and civil life representatives (read here Universities), as well as LUGs and various local Free Software associations that are trying to push the use of FLOSS in the Public Administration. My track is scheduled in the morning and will be called "Get Used to Thinking For Yourself", a paper in which I try to stimulate my listeners to understand the alternatives in software and why they are so important, as well as the philosophy of the Free Software (seen as sharing and freedom, but that does not prevent to make money... you all know what I'm talking about :) presenting various analogies with other aspects of our life, like the global pollution as well as other social themes like unemployment, etc.. and what if 30 years ago we had done different choices. In other words, how a monopoly can change a whole social structure (this has happened in Italy, for example, with FIAT, when they had public money up to a point that they had not a company politics at all, and that lead the proliferation of private transport and infrastructure and the absence of public transport - no trailroads etc..). Other tracks are about OpenOffice, Secure Wireless, Software Emulation (run Windows application on Linux), and overview of the new GPLv3 and more. As I said, on the afternoon there will be the discussion will be about the Regional Law. I would head it (Be the editor-in-chief), and we would publish it every 2 months (with some other special releases). I really think this would be good for us. We would have no costs besides hosting for the magazine which I think the web team could take care of (I'll ask them also). We could have a set few staff (5-10), and then have open submission where all the members of the community can send in articles, and the staff would pick the best to go in. I'd license the magazine under Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 License (or something else?) the point is it wouldn't be copyrighted (or it can be... but i'd prefer it to be open). We could arrange to get it printed in the future and take advertisements from people in the community. No stupid ads for some buy this coffee maker today..unless the coffee maker runs fedora;). So yeah, I just wanna get approval, and see how it goes. If you wanna be on the staff and you are a good writer (duh....) just email me (acapur{At]arcnetworks[dot}biz). It could really market fedora, get us more users, and teach our users new things. I really wanna do this, I've got some really good ideas!! P.S. I've BCC'ed this to the Ambassadors list. What to you plan to put in? Isn't FWN already a "Fedora Online Magazine"? FWN (which is no more host by fedoranews.org ;-) ) get released each week. All news about Fedora are reported in, thanks to Thomas and his team. IMHO, if you want to write some words, involved yourself in the FWN team or in the doc project (if you want to write technical doc). Fill it yourself, or tell them; "I can not accept Free Media Requests that are made by emailing me personally. You must fill out the request form at FreeMedia [1] It opens on the first of every month and once your name is in the queue I or another Ambassador/Contributor will get your disc out just as soon as we can. Regardless of the list, Free Media requests that are directed to one person are a big problem. We just don't have the resources to fill all of the formal requests and that sends people to the "back door" seeing if they can get a disc. I know I sound like a broken record, but for me it's very embarrassing to have such a long list of requests and so few people getting discs. (as of this morning, there are 200 names in the June list and less than 60 have been filled) You all know that I fill discs based on sponsorships I receive at On-Disk.com (order fedora, send a sponsorship) and a few things are happening on my end that I can comment about. One, The FC6 List for May hadn't been finished when F7 was released, so a large number of the sponsorships that came in via On-Disk.com with the rush for the fresh release were needed to fill the back log. (evidence for our ongoing problem) Two, the Mad rush for a new release is calming down so there aren't as many sponsorships each week. (why I've only filled 30 from June) Three, with the huge number of people still waiting for a disc and July just around the corner, I'm feeling more than a little bummed about the whole situation. (evidence showing a problem continues into the future) Four, I'm even more bummed that I've asked for ideas and assistance to get the word out, yet there have been only a few responses. Meanwhile there has been 14 emails about the 7 year itch... Around 35 messages about infinite freedom. (evidence that I'm barking up the wrong tree and I'm not sure which is the right tree) ~Karlie From gdk at redhat.com Fri Jun 22 14:10:51 2007 From: gdk at redhat.com (Greg Dekoenigsberg) Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2007 10:10:51 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [Ambassadors] Helping Free Media In-Reply-To: <467BD5E3.5080802@fedoraproject.org> References: <467AF721.6060205@projetofedora.org> <3668180e0706211533q45f30346h61c6fec900ca7f9a@mail.gmail.com> <467BC69C.7040207@fedoraproject.org> <3668180e0706220628v3dd2c065j39d94d9a89923481@mail.gmail.com> <467BD5E3.5080802@fedoraproject.org> Message-ID: On Fri, 22 Jun 2007, Karlie Robinson wrote: > Four, I'm even more bummed that I've asked for ideas and assistance to > get the word out, yet there have been only a few responses. Lots of talkers, not enough doers? It's a common problem. So let's talk it through. Thanks for the kick in the behind, Karlie. I believe that we have a problem with infrastructure of participation. Let's start with the assumption that Ambassadors want to help. I think it's reasonable to ask Fedora Ambassadors to help fill Free Media requests on a semi-regular basis. Given this assumption: What does the workflow look like, right now? It's still email-list based, right? How does an ambassador, or anyone else, get involved? The answer isn't *simple* and *clear* to me from looking at the wiki page. I'm guessing that doesn't help adoption of this worthy project. The email list is a good start, but it's time to move beyond that. The workflow for this *should* be web-based, database driven, and simple: 1. ANYONE can go to the FreeMedia web request. 2. Request goes into appropriate regional queue -- which is publicly visible. 3. ANYONE can claim the request. If they're actual ambassadors, they get some kind of credit, but literally ANYONE can join and claim requests. Request goes into the regional "pending" queue -- which is publicly visible. Email is sent to the requestor that says "hey, so-and-so has sent you a disc. Please click HERE when you receive it." 4. When the requestor receives the disc, he/she clicks the link, and the request is moved from "pending" to "completed" regional queue. "Credit" is given if the person is in the account system. I believe that we need this kind of workflow to make FreeMedia a success. I also believe that this is one case where we could consider rewarding contributors. Send 100 pieces of media, get a shirt signed by Max. Or something. FreeMedia is struggling. It shouldn't be. It's too good of an idea to struggle. Max -- do we have any TurboGears gurus who could spend a few days to get this project off the ground and hook it into the Fedora Account System? Because it shouldn't be too complicated. --g -- Greg DeKoenigsberg Community Development Manager Red Hat, Inc. :: 1-919-754-4255 "To whomsoever much hath been given... ...from him much shall be asked" From webpath at fedoraproject.org Fri Jun 22 15:40:52 2007 From: webpath at fedoraproject.org (Karlie Robinson) Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2007 11:40:52 -0400 Subject: [Ambassadors] Helping Free Media In-Reply-To: References: <467AF721.6060205@projetofedora.org> <3668180e0706211533q45f30346h61c6fec900ca7f9a@mail.gmail.com> <467BC69C.7040207@fedoraproject.org> <3668180e0706220628v3dd2c065j39d94d9a89923481@mail.gmail.com> <467BD5E3.5080802@fedoraproject.org> Message-ID: <467BED84.7060604@fedoraproject.org> +1 for working smarter and not harder. It is really easy to do. You join up in the mailing list then reply to the request with I accept this request. Burn the disc and mail it off to the person requesting the dvd. I usually take care of Australia so all I do is look for someone who requests from Australia reply and mail them the Disc. We, Ambassadors are not part of Distribution project and we should not ask for media from Fedora Project to distribute them under Fedora Free Media Program. Fedora Free Media Program was originally created by concerned members of the Fedora Ambassadors Project in an effort to deliver Fedora media for those who can't afford to download or get from media vendors. Fedora Free Media Program also has a clear guideline in the Information page[1] which states we supposed to burn and ship media using our own resources (DVD writer, blank media, shipping materials and postage). It's _JUST_ wrong to join Ambassadors Project and Free Media Program _JUST_ to receive some free media from Fedora Project. If this continues, I rather close down the Free Media Program once for all. This is not why I started this program originally. In other hand, if you joined Ambassadors Project and Free Media Program, you _MUST_ burn and ship at least 1 DVD a month. If you can't do that, I would politely ask you remove yourself from the program since we have so many _INACTIVE_ members in the program.
