It's a bit late, but better late than never ;) 1st day (Saturday, June 16th) The whole event took place at one of the buildings of Cracow University of Technology. When we arrived at the meeting place, there were many community members. They were waiting for registration. Before the event started, we set had set up our booth. Registration didn't take long, immediately after this almost everyone went for the room where presentations took place. The first speech was an official welcome from organizers. Then the presentations started. On the first day, there were many speeches about the new Fedora 7 release, Red Hat Neterprise Linux 5, virtualization and the Fedora community in Poland and Europe. After these topics, we had a break for a dinner. After a meal people come back for next presentation, about virtualisation (Xen), Red Hat in Poland, preparing the RPM packages and Ruby on Rails. Then the "official" part of the event on the first day was finished. We met again on a Krakow marketplace for Linux Party, to integrate the community ;) We had a great fun till late hours, but because of the next day we had to come back and sleep a bit. 2nd day (Sunday, June 17th) On the second day, the event started with a presentation about licences. Then, we could see speeches about Compiz, KDE4, Jabber and Fedora Directory Server. After them, the community went for a short break for dinner, that is delicous pizza ;) After coming back, there were presentations about Red Hat Internet servers and TeX. If it comes about swag, the Fedora T-shirts were sold out quite quickly. On the second day, I had a very few T-shirts left, and in some moment my supply was empty. Excepts the T-shirts, we've also sold some stickers, FUDCon bracelets, and posters, and I've given out rest of Fedora 6 DVDs that I had with me. I think that was a great opportunity to promote Fedora. The community had a chance to integrate, and that succeed. A conclusion from the event is, that next time I have to take more swag with me :) We've gained few new ambassadors what is an awesome news for Fedora Project in Poland. This event was successful inter alia because of the fact, that on next event, which is Software Freedom Day already on September 15th, we'll have our own booth, and there will be at least 4 Fedora ambassadors. I'll give a speech about the Fedora Project generally and about the new Fedora 7 release. The Fedora community in Poland is on the right way :) You can download some photos here: http://tinyurl.com/3bgkzz. I'm writing this in a hurry, and I will put my photos somewhere ASAP. The Project Days that are part of foss.in 2007 are: * Debian/Ubuntu * Fedora * Gnome * IndLinux * KDE * Mozilla * OpenOffice.org * OpenSolaris Now, these eight Project Days sessions will be part of the CfP that will be published next week, and people will be able to submit talk proposals for each of them (and the Main conference, of course). So, now is the time to look at the proposal for the Fedora Project Day and arrive at: + rounding up speakers for talks and presentations + swag ideas In the event you missed the proposal - here's a link: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FOSSin - - Sankarshan Note from the foss.in team: A reminder as well: if you are unable to get credible subsessions (talks and workshops) together through the CfP, you *may* face dropping. The same applies to the nature of the subsessions - if they are not contributor oriented (just user oriented) or if we find that the majority of sub sessions are by people from a single commercial organisation, we will reconsider your selection. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.7 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Fedora - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD4DBQFG3ke3XQZpNTcrCzMRAiibAJjrRedOzf2/14gTmE7N7wC/mnOLAJ4i18j0 lFTrP5LZjbs0Hs3VpkJdUQ== =om2P -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- From sundaram at fedoraproject.org Wed Sep 5 13:15:05 2007 From: sundaram at fedoraproject.org (Rahul Sundaram) Date: Wed, 05 Sep 2007 18:45:05 +0530 Subject: [Ambassadors] Updated Fedora Customs Letter In-Reply-To: <9d2c731f0709032313x4b4c9241wf70078a97e1f217b@mail.gmail.com> References: <9d2c731f0709032313x4b4c9241wf70078a97e1f217b@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: <46DEABD9.90007@fedoraproject.org> John Babich wrote: > I updated the Fedora customs letter and posted it to the relevant wiki page at: > > http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Ambassadors/CustomsLetter > > I changed all references to "Fedora Core" to "Fedora 7" and retained > the ODT document format. Actually, these days, I've been busy with my research regarding "Business Incubation and sustainable models for developing countries". This is just to inform you that we're celebrating Software Freedom Day 2007 (see http://www.tuxolta.com/wiki/index.php?title=Software_Freedom_Day_2007)at Nepal. The event is sponsored by High Level Commission for Information Technology (see http://www.hlcit.gov.np), a wing of the government of Nepal. They have also exhibited positive signs for revising the ICT policy of the country and regarding FOSS as an necessary element. On my part, as an ambassador, I'm presenting on Fedora 7 which includes the following topics: * Fedora Project: An introduction (very brief) * Why Fedora 7 * GNOME (on F7) * SELinux * Xen * some discrete apps (yet to be finalized) Moreover, I'll be distributing 250 DVDs of F7 (which has been sponsored by my university) at the event. I need some help to prepare for my presentation, specially SELinux and Xen. I hope to hear from you soon. Thanking You. First we are going to place the machine at WBUT so that people can come and burn the distros they want. We also look forward to spread that to different colleges. Hereby we are calling for participation in the freedom toaster alike project. People in and around kolkata is preferred , so that they can come down personally, but they need not be WBUT students. Please note its not going to be a replica of the freedom toaster project. We shall write our own softwares and change the specs according to our needs.[so that participants can spend a few sleepless nights :). ] We are also going to make our own kiosk, so we also need people who can do mechanical engg jobs. Note: The Fedora Project wiki page for GITEX is now at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraEvents/PastEvents/2007 I was able to volunteer all day on Saturday, 8 September, the opening day of the show, Sunday, 9 September, and most of Monday,10 September. Lloyd Almeida, a fellow Fedora ambassador working as an animation artist in Dubai, did a terrific job of representing the Fedora Project. A special thanks to Lloyd. Keep in mind that GITEX is one of the world's largest ICT trade shows, with an emphasis on commercial offerings. Free and Open Source software (FOSS) is still very much in the minority at the show. Highlights: - Red Hat, our corporate sponsor, did a great job with the booth and generating interest in linux and open source. For instance, there were only five daily GITEX IT Solutions newspapers published. On Monday, OpenNet MEA, a Red Hat partner, was the cover story, featuring its new agreement with Red Hat, complete with a photo of a gentlemen with a red hat at the RH booth. Since Red Hat was the only major open source linux company present among thousands of companies, this was an amazing piece of publicity for FOSS. - The Red Hat partners in the booth, OpenNet MEA, Magirus, IT University, and AMD, were a great bunch of people. They helped distribute Fedora 7 DVDs and Live CDs to their potential customers and anyone interested. They also directed people to us who had questions about linux in general and Fedora in particular. - One Laptop Per Child was well-publicized. There was a dedicated demo pod for the OLPC XO laptop. People were actually taking pictures of the laptop like it was the crown jewels. There was tremendous interest in promoting the OLPC laptop in the EMEA region. Many people wanted to buy one on the spot. I was privileged to demonstrate it and answer questions for people as an unofficial spokesperson. - The synergy among Red Hat, OLPC, AMD and the Fedora Project was fantastic. Because Fedora linux is the base software for the OLPC XO laptop, as well as RHEL5, with AMD providing the OLPC CPU, I was able to tie together all the organizations and explain how open source provides a virtuous circle of collaboration which is all too rare in the corporate world. AMD had just announced it was open sourcing ATI video drivers, so I could explain the advantages of open source, open standards, and unencumbered binary drivers. AMD also announced the new quad-core Barcelona CPU during the show. - There was great interest in localization (l10n), internationalization (i18n), and translation. We showed, for example, how GNOME supported three dialects of Arabic (Lebanese, Eqyptian and Saudi). I also promoted Transifex, and the Fedora Documentation and Translation Projects. - I gave two booth talks on the Fedora Project to an audience of IT professionals just becoming acquainted with FOSS. - One attendee literally praised God when I gave him a Fedora DVD, saying that he was unsuccessful in downloading it for the past few weeks. We forget that there are large sections of the world which don't have reliable, high-speed internet connections. Finally, thanks to everyone in the Fedora Project who helped out. Finally, I posted some photos at www.photobucket.com. Thanks, Greg! I did, however, update it for Fedora 7 and added a few pithy insights of my own. I put in transitions to show off OpenOffice.org Impress. I also think it's important to explain that this was produced completely in OOo Impress on a Fedora 7 system, especially at a commercial ICT exhibition. The intended audience is the open-minded, non-FOSS ICT professional. Mozilla Firefox and OpenOffice.org, not explicitly mentioned in the presentation, are two FOSS apps which are an excellent bridge from using a certain proprietary OS to switching to Fedora. I used them as examples in my talk, I think, to good effect. The Reason for the succesfull events in Europe and the progress in Europe to communicate and help one another in 2007 was the outstanding work of many ambassadors accross europe - but - this would not happened in this quality without the FAD in Dec2006. So i recommend the FAD2007 to everyone who is willing to force our work in 2008. CU Joerg p.s. Maybe some of our french friends will also participate - because they have one of the biggest communities in Europe and are pioneers in some of the mentioned topics - remember the talk on Fosdem from Thomas. -- J?rg Simon jsimon at fedoraproject.org http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/JoergSimon Key Fingerprint: 3691 0989 2DCA 58A2 8D1F 2CAC C823 558E 5B5B 5688 -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Too often there was no really benefit to attend the meetings. It?s pretty cushy ;-) and much more efficient to make a shortcut to reach his goals. I remember discussions which ended in confusion and frustration - so i decided to meet people in real and attend the irc meetings when there are vital topics. I will speak with the fellows on FAD 2007 maybe there is a fresh idea. cheers Joerg -- J?rg Simon jsimon at fedoraproject.org http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/JoergSimon Key Fingerprint: 3691 0989 2DCA 58A2 8D1F 2CAC C823 558E 5B5B 5688 -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... WHAT WENT WELL * PLANNING: By giving Red Hat plenty of advance notice, Red Hat graciously provided us with a demo pod and HP desktop. The desktop with integrated Intel graphics allowed us to wow the passers-by with wobbly windows and rotating cubes - eye candy, but eye-catching, important at a large show. A special thanks to Veronique Borel, who organized Red Hat's presence at GITEX. * BLOGGING: Posting about the Fedora Project at GITEX was well worth the effort. Incidentally, we were the top page rank for GITEX on Google for quite a few weeks. Thanks to the Fedorans who encouraged me to blog. * ONE-ON-ONE: Lloyd Almeida and I, as Fedora Ambassadors, spoke to dozens of people about Fedora and FOSS. Lloyd, who works in Dubai, made contacts for the linux user group he hopes to start up soon. Thanks, Lloyd, for your invaluable help and enthusiasm. * MEDIA (CDs and DVDs): All told, we distributed hundreds of media to the crowds. Red Hat shipped about 400 Fedora 7 DVDs to the show, which were put to good use. Red Hat and the RH partners were very helpful in spreading the word about Fedora. They gladly handed out Fedora DVDs and Live CDs. Thank you to my fellow RedHat EMEA, OpenNet MEA, Margirus, AMD and IT University booth dwellers. * BROCHURE: The Fedora Project flyer in both English and Arabic was a great tool. The excellent artwork gave a very positive impression of the Fedora Project. Thanks, Ahmed Kamal, for your bilingual design. * OLPC: The OLPC XO laptop was well-displayed and caused quite a stir. I was able to speak to several VIPs about this significant educational project. Yes, the technology is cool, too. Thank you to the Red Hat and Fedora people involved in the OLPC project. * BUDGET: On a personal note, I stayed within my modest budget in a very expensive city. Thanks, Bill, for putting me up and putting up with me. WHAT WE CAN DO BETTER * I personally printed the two-sided flyers on a deskjet printer at Bill's villa. Next time, I'll get them professionally printed. * More Fedora ambassadors would be very welcome. Lloyd and I could only cover 3 out of 5 days of the show. (We did have some ambassadors who volunteered, but were unable to attend due to the prohibitive cost of flights and hotels in Dubai.) * I would like to present a booth talk on the One Laptop Per Child, perhaps in a more official capacity. CONCLUSION Going to the GITEX commercial exhibition, with a little help from my friends, was definitely worthwhile. I believe we, as Fedora Ambassadors, were able to inform people about the advantages of free and open source software. I found it personally rewarding to demonstrate the OLPC XO laptop and to introduce people to the Fedora Project. Message-ID: <20070929190248.12054051@localhost.localdomain> Dear Fedora user, All the French Fedora Team is glad to announce you the creation of the association of the French speaking Fedora users. We will need your help to drive this project where all the users of Fedora are working for the same goal, the promotion of Fedora. Why an association ? * In order to promote Free software in general and the Fedora distribution in particular. This promotion will lead to the creation of support for the Fedora promotion, from simple flyers to CD/DVD for the installation of Fedora. * To support our website, one of the most important tool for the French community. *?An association helps to increase the presence of the French community and gives more weight to his talk, indeed an association has more credibility in front of its partners, ie Fedora project, Red Hat or others. You should notice that the association has no link with the Fedora project itself or Red Hat. The project has been informed of the creation of the association but did not encourage it or support it in any way. What are the goals of the association ? * Promote free software around a central element: the GNU/Linux distribution Fedora. * Promote Fedora on different associations and events or meetings. * Create a network integrating users and developers of the Fedora GNU/Linux distribution. What are our resources ? * The French ambassador team, localized all around France, involved in different Linux User Group and other association. * The dues from our members. * The sell of goodies (T-shirts, mugs, hat...) should financially help to the association. Who is at the head of the association ? The member of the board are: President: Thomas Canniot (MrTom) Vice-president: Armel Kermorvant (armelk) Treasurer: Johan Cwiklinski (trashy) Secretary: Guillaume Kulakowski (llaumgui) Other members of the board: Maxime Carron (Pingoomax) Thierry Delmonte (Titax) Charles Vinchon (littlecharly) All are Fedora ambassador. Why becoming a member ? * Because you wish to be imply in the association's activities. * Because you wish to financially support the association to promote the distribution GNU/Linux Fedora and Free Software, without being actively involved in these actions. * Because you can become a member from 10 euros. Who can become a member ? The association accepts all French speaking people who wish to help the promotion of the Free software and the GNU/Linux distribution Fedora. How to become a member ? We invite you to have a look at the procedure described on the association's website http://asso.fedora-fr.org/Comment_devenir_membre How to do a simple donation ? If you wish to do a simple donation, you can have a look at the website http://asso.fedora-fr.org/Dons How to be involved in the Association actions ? One of the first goal of the association is to create support for the Fedora promotion during different the events and meetings. If you wish to be involved, actually there are several projects for which we are looking for help: * Small books presenting Fedora * Flyers * Posters * Stickers * Pens * Keyrings * ... We are also looking for partners to create Fedora CDs/DVDs. Where to find information about the association ? One website for all information, http://asso.fedora-fr.org All the team of Fedora-fr association is available to answer your questions and help you to lead your projects. Fedora-fr Team. It would be nice to have few Fedora DVDs or gadgets this year, especially because we will already have many Ubuntu DVDs, I would like to present to the public Fedora also. I'll be in fedora-mkgt today around 18.00 (CET) (infact I'm there already logged but I'm going away for a couple of hours), if we want to talk about it, I was thinking that a live meeting with other lugs would be nice to have, if we can set up something that would be great!
