From jkeating at redhat.com Tue May 2 17:30:11 2006 From: jkeating at redhat.com (Jesse Keating) Date: Tue, 02 May 2006 13:30:11 -0400 Subject: New mail list for package announcements. Message-ID: <1146591011.10316.73.camel@dhcp83-49.boston.redhat.com> As we continue to integrate Fedora subprojects into the main Fedora infrastructure, the need for a common point of package update information became clear. At the same time, it became clear that fedora-announce was not the proper place for this. To resolve these issues, we've created 'fedora-package-announce at redhat.com' email list. This list will serve as an announcement point for package announcements for potentially all Fedora sub-projects. If you would like to receive announcements of package updates, you will need to subscribe to this list: http://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-package-announce Because this list can be used by many subprojects, we will be setting up filters that can be used to allow users to only get announcements they care about. Currently we have filters setup for Fedora Core 3, 4, and 5 package announcements. These announcements are the only ones that will currently be sent to this list, however Fedora Extras and Fedora Legacy could begin sending soon, and we will setup filters for their announcements as well. When you first subscribe, you will receive all announcements made. You can use the membership configuration screen to adjust what announcements you wish to get. These options are near the bottom of the configuration list. As some package announcements have already gone to this list, please check the archives if you think you've missed something. The archives can be found here: https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-package-announce/ fedora-announce-list will continue to be used for important announcements regarding the Fedora project, such as Core releases and test releases, Fedora News updates, messages from Max and the board, etc... It will just no longer get package update mails. We're sorry for the inconvenience of having users subscribe on their own, but mass subscribing users to a list without their explicit consent could be considered spam. This is obviously something we would rather not do. -- Jesse Keating Release Engineer: Fedora -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Hello! Good day! :-) The Unofficial Fedora FAQ has been updated for Fedora Core 5! As always, you can find the FAQ at: http://www.fedorafaq.org/ This was a HUGE update, which involved re-writing the instructions for almost every question. Now we have working instructions for yum, nVidia cards, ATI cards, NTFS drives, and much, much more. In addition, I added two totally new questions: - How can I help out the Fedora Project? - How do I play DVDs in Fedora? As always, I really like your feedback! Feel free to send me your contributions! I'm always looking out for what questions are really frequently asked by the Fedora community. -Max -- http://www.insiderfaq.com/ The Insider FAQ: Linux Made Simple. In the past, Core packages have not been held to the same standards as Extras. We want to fix this! We're starting by cleaning up the spec files so that Core packages can all be built using Mock. (If you aren't familiar with Mock, it's a cool RPM build tool that we use to build Fedora Extras.) This is where you come in: We need people to attempt Mock builds of Fedora Core packages, and file bugs when they find packages that don't build. Doing so will earn you the thanks and respect of your peers, but as an added incentive we're going to give away free stuff (!) to people who help out. Filing a bug on a broken package will earn you one Karma Point. If you include a patch that makes that package build successfully, you'll get five Karma Points. These will be redeemable for cool stuff from the Red Hat Cool Stuff Store (at an exchange rate to be determined once we figure out how much stuff we're actually allowed to give away :) For more info, check out: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/FixBuildRequires Ok? We have an updated yum configuration, updated PDF instructions, and improved a *lot* of little things throughout the FAQ. If you need to require a specific _version_, you should use that. But if you just need to require that it exists, you don't need to do anything -- the standard gcc development packages depend on it. If there's a file missing from /usr/include/linux or /usr/include/asm when you try to build, that's either a bug in the glibc-kernheaders package, or a bug in the package you're trying to build. If it's a kernel header you _should_ be using from userspace, assume the former and file a bug against glibc-kernheaders. If the latter, fix it not to include kernel headers. Do _NOT_ add 'BuildRequires: glibc-kernheaders' to any packages. That will break.
