Well, looking quickly at art.gnome.org:

mocked up starting from a clean design)

I know it's not too much appealing but i think that there are good  
ideas in those above to develop more.

As a side note, this one would be a nice "inclusion" to available GDM  
themes at install time (maybe adding an F somewhere):
