The problem of having too dark background is that it can be tiresome on 
the eyes, as most app windows have lighter background, and
we get a very contrast rich appearance when the desktop is in use.  I 
would also say that conservative is good.  The graphics appearance
should not be in the face of the user. He probably  have more important 
things to think of and we should not try to disturb him.

What annoys me in the current version is the white f  in the center just 
above the white cloud. It draws my eyes like a magnet and should
be toned down or removed.  To get the desktop a little ligter you could 
try to use the dark blue of the almost invisible filled ballon over
the  annoying white f as overall background color.
