Recording from front mic in Fedora 11

Tried that already.  alsamixer -V capture gives me a single control to
move up or down. It doesn't allow me to switch between mics and I have
to use kmix or xfce4-mixer (both of which have a long list of
dependencies, some of which are odd ) to actually do what I want.

I tried alsamixer -V capture -c0 gives me more controls but front mic is
disabled with no way to adjust that setting. Not sure whether there is
any better solution and telling users to install other desktop
environment's volume control doesn't seem right. Open to ideas.
