I'm getting the following:

# rpm -hiv /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386/java-1.4.2-gcj-compat-1.4.2.0-40jpp_45rh.i386.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
        libgcjawt.so.7 is needed by java-1.4.2-gcj-compat-1.4.2.0-40jpp_45rh.i386


Also, Andrew's instructions should mention that ecj.sh.in and *.jar need
to be copied into the SOURCES directory.
